My Oshawa Grounds Life

I was halfway through scrubbing rain off the driver's side window with my sleeve when the guy from the shop stepped out and waved me over. It was 3:12 pm, the sky a flat grey that makes everything look slightly expensive and slightly sad in Vancouver. Car idling, heat on full because my fingers were numb, I felt like I was part of some small ritual: hand over a set of keys, try to explain what you want without sounding GleamWorks like someone who watched one too many deta

I was hunched over the hood, rain still beading on the paint, watching a guy from the shop peel back a strip of paint protection film. The city smelled like wet oil and coffee from the Tim Hortons across the street. It was 3:10 p.m., and I had already run late because traffic on Broadway had turned into one of those slow, stop-and-go things that make you resent every lane change you ever made. My friend’s Subaru sat under the fluorescent lights, half wrapped, half-glossy. I

I was halfway through rinsing coffee from my sleeve when the tech leaned in and said, "We guarantee coverage for ten years, but you have to bring it in every two years for an inspection." Rain was splattering the windshield like static, the kind Vancouver rain that doesn't really pour but insists on being noticed. I had driven across town from Kitsilano at 3:15 p.m., stuck behind a bus that never seemed to decide when to stop. My friend was waiting in the passenger seat, sc

I was hunched over the hood at 2:07 pm, rain still misting the windshield, trying to convince myself the spiderweb swirl marks weren’t as bad as they looked. My friend Marcus was on the phone in the driver's seat, cursing Vancouver traffic and telling me he’d left his wallet in his other jacket. We were outside a tiny detailing shop off Cambie, the kind of place with a chalkboard menu of services and three guys who smelled faintly of polish and coffee. Marcus had already bo

I was hunched over the passenger seat at 8:12 a.m., rain pattering against the windshield, reading a text from my friend that said, "Are you sure you can actually do this?" The Civic heater had finally stopped rattling and the wipers were squeaking like a small animal. I remember thinking, okay, breathe, because coordinating two different shops in Vancouver on a Tuesday that suddenly felt busier than a Saturday was not in my weekend plans. But there I was, in Kitsilano, try

The shop's fluorescent light hummed above my head as the tech slid a clear film panel into place, squinting like he was reading a menu in a dim diner. Rain spattered the garage door. Outside, on Cambie, the bus horn squealed and someone cursed loudly at a delivery truck. I had been staring at the rear quarter panel of my car for 20 minutes wondering if a straight edge meant anything or if I was just being paranoid. I was cold, mildly annoyed, and oddly invested. Why I wa

I was hunched over the passenger seat at 8:23 a.m., rain spitting at the windshield, trying to read three different quotes on my phone at once. My friend had texted "help" at 7:12 and then sent photos of her new lease — a white Subaru Crosstrek with a chip already in the bumper. So here I was, soaked slippers on the floor, half a muffin in my lap, comparing prices for ppf bancouver like some kind of reluctant consultant. The weirdest part of the phone calls I called t

I was hunched over the hood of my friend's Subaru at 10:17 a.m., rain spitting sideways off Burrard Street, squinting at a weird outline where the clear film met the paint. The shop smelled like rubbing alcohol and hot plastic. My friend was on the phone with the installer, repeating the same question three ways because they kept getting put on hold. I had driven through solid traffic from Kitsilano, windows fogging, thinking this would be a quick drop-off and a coffee. It
