My Oshawa Grounds Life

I was hunched over the hood at 2:15 pm, rain tapping a quick, impatient rhythm on the windshield, trying to convince myself that a clear coat sample on a scrap panel would tell me anything useful. The shop's fluorescent lights smelled faintly of plastic and coffee, the kind of coffee that has been reheated twice. My friend Marcus was inside, arguing quietly about edge wraps and warranty hours with a guy who kept saying "we'll take a look" like it was a promise. We'd driv

I was hunched over the steering wheel on Granville at 6:12 p.m., rain half-wiping across the windshield, texting my friend the three names I’d narrowed down. The meter read 18 minutes until the shop closed, my shoes were soaked from the puddles at the curb, and my brain felt like one big spreadsheet of quotes and coffee stains. I had promised to help him find the best place for ppf bancouver, and somehow this weekend turned into me doing reconnaissance on his behalf. The

I was hunched over the hood, rain still beading on the paint, watching a guy from the shop peel back a strip of paint protection film. The city smelled like wet oil and coffee from the Tim Hortons across the street. It was 3:10 p.m., and I had already run late because traffic on Broadway had turned into one of those slow, stop-and-go things that make you resent every lane change you ever made. My friend’s Subaru sat under the fluorescent lights, half wrapped, half-glossy. I

I was hunched over the hood at 2:07 pm, rain still misting the windshield, trying to convince myself the spiderweb swirl marks weren’t as bad as they looked. My friend Marcus was on the phone in the driver's seat, cursing Vancouver traffic and telling me he’d left his wallet in his other jacket. We were outside a tiny detailing shop off Cambie, the kind of place with a chalkboard menu of services and three guys who smelled faintly of polish and coffee. Marcus had already bo

I was crouched on the sidewalk outside a tiny shop in Mount Pleasant at 6:17 pm, rain still beading on my jacket, watching my friend argue gently with the owner about cure times. Somewhere inside, fluorescent light hummed, the smell of isopropyl cut through the damp, and a rattle of music leaked from an old Bluetooth speaker. My friend’s car, a tired Subaru with a new set of winter tires, looked almost embarrassed to be so well taken care of. I remember thinking, of all the

I was hunched over my steering wheel, rain streaking the windshield like someone had taken a sponge to the city, staring at a portfolio propped up on a shop counter. The fluorescent lights buzzed, the heater GleamWorks in my old Civic coughed once and died, and my fingers were still damp from unlocking my phone to compare photos. It was 2:13 p.m., Tuesday, and I had already been through three shops that day, from Kitsilano to near the SkyTrain in Richmond. I felt like a v

I was hunched over the hood at 7:12 a.m., rain flicking at my collar, squinting at a bead of water the size of a dime that refused to roll off the roof. My friend Marco was late, of course. He lives in Mount Pleasant and has a habit of thinking 8:00 means 8:15. I had agreed to drive his car to work because his scooter was in the shop, and the plan was simple: pick him up, take the car for a spin, and drop it off. Except the car had been ceramic coated three days earlier and

I was hunched over my phone at 3:15 pm, rain on the windshield, Vancouver traffic moving like molasses on Georgia Street, trying not to look obvious while refreshing the ppf bancouver Instagram feed for the fourth time. My friend Leah had texted me an hour earlier: "Are they legit? My boss wants the car wrapped and ceramic coated, but the quote seems low." I still had coffee cold in the cup holder and a stack of paperwork on the passenger seat. It felt like detective work,
